The IDA 2 is designed as a hand-held unit for on-site use. However, the IDA is much more than a handy direction finder. The IDA 2 makes features previously only available in larger systems both affordable and portable. The IDA translates the technical possibilities into a tactical solution. It is the ideal instrument for the "last mile", the direct line to the target. Searching for interference and direction finding are complex operations. As a specialist device, the IDA makes the application simple - not leas thanks to intelligent direction finding with SmartDF. The invisible is visible.

I/Q Data in IDA 2

RF impairments or interference is often difficult to detect, particularly if it is sporadic or hidden beneath the regular signals. The IDA 2 now has I/Q analysis functions to allow you to reliably locate such signals too. The instrument records the I/Q data in real time and saves up to 250,000 I/Q data pairs without compression, i.e. without loss of data.

Based on the I/Q data, the IDA 2 generates high resolution spectrograms, persistence spectrums, and time domain displays without the need for external computation. RF impairments and interference can thus be detected and analyzed on the spot.

Detect, analyze and localize with smartDF®

smartDF is a process for systematic, rapid localization of suspect signals, interference sources and leaks using hand held direction finders that was developed by Narda and implemented in the IDA. It is specially useful under difficult conditions or in the presence of complex signals. Interference sources can be localized much faster using the IDA 2 than with conventional hand- held direction finders.

The advantages of smartDF® are particularly seen in:

  • Effective simultaneous direction finding of several transmitters on different frequencies,
  • Direction finding on a signal in the presence of strong reflections or transmitters on the same frequency,
  • Direction finding on complex signals e.g. broadband communications, as well as pulsed or sporadic signals.

The background for smartDF is an instrument supported systematic process for direction finding utilizing the tools integrated into the IDA for this purpose, to reach the goal as quickly as possible: To determine the geographical coordinates of a source. The first step identifies all the suspect signals in the spectrum and saves them in a table. The second step qualifies the questionable signals by demodulation and real-time analysis in Scope mode and Level Meter mode, and the table cleaned up accordingly. The third step involves finding the bearings of the remaining signals, eliminating reflections and common channel interference, and saving the measurement data. The fourth step repeats the process form a second direction finding location, identifying the source location by triangulation and plotting it on the built-in map if needed.
There is no longer any need to make complicated settings of the instrument for each separate signal. The experience of the person measuring is part of the measurement strategy, and the result is presented electronically, so printed maps, a compass, and pencil are no longer needed.
